Advice I Would Give My Younger Self

Unfortunately, I've come to realize that much of what my elders told me was correct.

Lessons:

  1. Sleep enough.
  2. Don't worry about grades. Worry about learning, and the grades will follow.
  3. Never externalize negative emotion in a passive way. This just offloads the burden that is your responsibility. Synthesize your emotions first and then if you externalize, make sure it's productive and direct.
  4. Don't say or do things that serve no other purpose than to communicate your misery or propagate confusion or despair.
  5. You must earn complexity and responsibility before adding any.
  6. Never feed into habits that are mostly for the sake of numbing.
  7. Read as much as possible, especially in formative years. For now, I'll tentatively say "formative years" is the first 25 years of life
  8. Learn as many frameworks for thought as possible as early as possible. Examples are reading and writing, formal math, foreign language, etc. I haven't formulated my opinion on if it's better to parallelize this or sequentially "master" them.
  9. Don't be lazy or self-indulgent. Use every waking hour for betterment. (Sep 30, 2021)
